ABSTRACT: TEACHERS’ ROLES AND TEACHıNG STYLES

In this session we are going to explore how the teacher can influence the dynamics of the classroom and bring out the best in each student. All learners learn differently but they all need to believe in their ability to succeed, they need to feel confident to ask questions, they need to know that the teacher is there to support them and that they belong to a harmonious group where there is mutual support and rapport. In order to reach all our students successfully, we need to become multisensory, to assess our own way of experiencing the world, so that we can use our strengths effectively and work on our weaker areas. Finally we shall address the need for teachers to create a balance between the role of guide/facilitator and that of an “authority” within the classroom.

PLENARY-4:  BENA GÜL PEKER                         by   EXPRESS PUBLISHING

ABSTRACT: TEACHING LANGUAGE IN A CONSTRUCTIVIST WAY

The study of learning and teaching is going through a major revolution with the   learner  assigned an active role and the teacher that of facilitator in this change. The teacher as facilitator takes on the responsibility of guiding learners through a journey of exploration and helping the learners to “build new knowledge from within”. This constructivist view of teaching and learning is extremely exciting and brain-compatible. And yet, it may be somewhat disappointing for both teachers and learners if teachers do not possess the know-how. This presentation will first discuss the art of teaching English in a constructivist manner to all grades; in particular young learners of Grades 6-8.  It will then demonstrate ways of how this can be turned into practice by means of elicitation, the right kind of questioning and task design.
