A Biography: BAHATTİN TATIŞ
Bahattin Tatış, founder of İzmir Private Turkish College, a man who dedicated his life to Turkish National Education and the young people who are the nation's future, was born on July 22nd, 1919 in İzmir. Starting his education at İzmir Halitbey Elementary School, Mr Tatış then finished middle school at İzmir Teacher's College for Men before completing his education at Edirne Teacher's College for Men. After working as a teacher for a year at his first duty post, Beyler Village of Seferihisar, he was accepted to the mathematics department at Ankara Gazi Education Institute. However, before he could begin his studies there, World War II broke out, and he was conscripted as a Reserve Officer School student. After serving his military duty, he returned to Gazi Education Institute and graduated as a mathematics teacher in 1943. After graduation he was hired as a mathematics teacher for the same Institute due to his high level of achievement, and three months later we was appointed as the assistant director of the Institute. When World War II threatened to flare again he was conscripted again and served as a mathematics teacher at Kuleli Military High School. At the end of his military service Mr Tatış returned to Gazi Education Institute. Then, due to marital reasons he requested and received an appointment as a mathematics teacher at İzmir Business College. During his tenure as a teacher for the Business School he started to cultivate the idea of opening a school in Izmir with standards comparable to those of prestigious private schools established by foreign founders. This culminated in the opening of İzmir Private Turkish College on November 15th, 1950. Between 1950 and 1975 he served as the manager of İzmir Private Turkish College. In 1968 he established the Near East Private Academy, the first private university in Turkey. He was awarded with Honorary Doctorate titles from the Ege University Senate in 1990-1991 and by the Dokuz Eylül University Senate in 1994-1995, for his contributions to secondary education.
His published works include Trigonometry Lectures, Geometry Lectures, Algebra Lectures, Ideals and Realities, 21stCentury Teacher, and Exist in the Future. He married Mrs. Cevriye Tatış in 1946 and they had two sons, Yavuz and Oğuz. Bahattin Tatış passed away on October 26th, 2008 at the age of 89. Since 2011, a traditional national award ceremony, the "Bahattin Tatış Award for Future Existence", is organised on November 15th, the date of ITK’s establishment. This award is presented to people who have achieved success in a variety of fields, from doctors to professional athletes, who in the words of Bahattin Tatış, will have a legacy that will "Exist in the Future".
