Bahattin Tatış (1919-2008)

Founder of İTK – Mathematics Teacher
The founder of İzmir Özel Türk Koleji, mathematics teacher Bahattin Tatış, who devoted his life to Turkish National Education and to educating individuals who would shape the country’s future, was born in İzmir on July 22, 1919.
Bahattin Tatış began his education at İzmir Halitbey Primary School. He completed middle school at İzmir Erkek Öğretmen Okulu. After finishing high school at Edirne Erkek Öğretmen Okulu, Tatış was appointed as a primary school teacher to his first post in Beyler Village, Seferihisar, İzmir.
After his one year assignment in Beyler Village, Tatış was admitted to the Mathematics Department of Ankara Gazi Eğitim ve Terbiye Enstitüsü. Due to World War II, he was called up as a Reserve Officer School student. Following his compulsory military service, Bahattin Tatış returned to his studies at Gazi Eğitim ve Terbiye Enstitüsü and graduated in 1943, receiving the title of mathematics teacher.
Due to his success and determination at Gazi Terbiye, Bahattin Tatış earned the appreciation of the faculty members and was appointed to the mathematics teaching staff of Gazi Terbiye Enstitüsü, and three months later to the position of vice principal.
With the intensification of World War II and the recall of reserve officers to active duty, he began working at Kuleli Military High School and served for three years as a lieutenant mathematics teacher. When his term ended, he returned to Gazi Terbiye.
Wishing to return to İzmir for family reasons and to unite his life with Mrs. Cevriye, Bahattin Tatış returned to İzmir after being appointed as a mathematics teacher at İzmir Ticaret Lisesi. During his teaching there, Tatış began research and work toward his dream of providing a college education like the colleges owned by foreigners.
On November 15, 1950, he took a step toward his dream by founding the Turkish College. He served as the principal of the Turkish College between 1950 and 1975. In 1968, he founded Yakındoğu Özel Yüksekokulları, another of his dreams.
An idealist and determined teacher, Tatış always aimed to provide an education that was disciplined, principled, and in step with the times. In recognition of his contributions to Turkish National Education, he was awarded the title of “Honorary Doctorate” by the Senate of Ege University in the 1990–1991 Academic Year, and by the Senate of Dokuz Eylül University in the 1994–1995 Academic Year.
With his love for mathematics and analytical mind, Tatış authored the textbooks Trigonometry Lessons, Geometry Lessons, and Algebra Lessons. His books titled Ideals and Realities, The 21st Century and the Teacher, and To Exist in Tomorrow were also published."
Always remembered with respect for founding the Turkish College and for his contributions to Turkish National Education, Bahattin Tatış passed away on October 26, 2008, at the age of 89.
